Subject: Timing of my sterile handling certification
Hi Bram,
I joined the central supply team two weeks ago, and my manager told me I cannot be assigned to the operating room supply runs until I complete Sterile Handling Certification, which apparently is a separate requirement from the general orientation I already finished. I checked the training portal and the next session is listed for the 15th, but I am currently scheduled to start a rotation covering the emergency department supply cart on the 12th, three days earlier.
Is it possible to move up my certification date, or would I need to delay the start of the emergency department rotation instead? I would prefer not to delay it if avoidable, since I understand that rotation was arranged around another employee's leave.
I also wanted to confirm something from my interview: I was told that my previous certification from Redwood General Hospital, where I worked for two years, might reduce the length of the course here. Is that still accurate, or does Fairhaven require the full course regardless of prior experience?
Lastly, the portal lists the course as four hours but does not say whether it includes a written test, a practical demonstration, or both. Knowing which would help me prepare properly.
Thank you,
Ines

Hi Ines,
Thanks for flagging this early. I can move you into a smaller certification session on the 11th, which we sometimes run for exactly this kind of scheduling conflict. That should let your emergency department rotation start as planned on the 12th without needing to delay anything.
On your Redwood General certification: it does help, but only partially. Because Fairhaven uses a different sterile packaging system, you will still need to complete the full four-hour course, though the instructor will likely let you skip the introductory section covering basic sterile principles, since that portion is identical across most hospitals. The reduction applies to your comfort with the material, not the scheduled length of the session itself.
The course includes both a short written quiz, mainly to confirm you understood the packaging differences, and a practical demonstration where you will need to correctly assemble and label three sample trays. You need to pass both components to be certified; there is no partial credit for passing only one.
I will send you a calendar invite for the 11th shortly. Let me know if the emergency department rotation timing changes on your end.
Bram
