Subject: Forklift certification before my shift change

Hi Colm,

I started on the receiving dock three weeks ago, and my supervisor mentioned that I need forklift certification before I can be moved to the freezer team, which is the position I actually applied for. I saw on the intranet that the next in-house course runs on the 9th and 10th, but I am scheduled to switch to the evening shift on the 8th, and evening staff are not on the list of people invited to daytime training.

Is there any way to attend the course anyway, even though I will technically be on evenings by then? I would rather not wait for the next session, because I was told it will not run again until sometime in the new year, and the freezer team posting closes at the end of this month.

I should also mention that I already hold a forklift ticket from my last job in Nova Scotia, issued in 2022. I do not know if that transfers, or if Harbourside requires its own version of the course regardless of prior certification.

One more question: the posting says the freezer team works four ten-hour days. Does that pattern start right away, or is there a probation period on the regular five-day schedule first?

Hi Renata,

Good questions. On the course: evening staff are excluded from the daytime session only because of the scheduling conflict, not by policy, so I can add you to the 9th and 10th before your shift change takes effect. You will need to arrange the morning of the 8th off, since the course runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.

Your Nova Scotia ticket does not transfer automatically. Provincial rules differ enough that we require every new hire to complete our two-day course regardless of prior certification, though your experience should make the practical section easy. There is no fee for repeat certification when you already hold a valid outside ticket.

On the schedule: the four-ten pattern applies immediately once you move to the freezer team. There is no separate probation period on the five-day schedule; the only requirement is that certification and the shift change both need to be complete before your first freezer shift, which HR has flagged as the 14th.
