How CELPIP Speaking Is Assessed

Official CELPIP Speaking responses are recorded and scored by qualified raters, not by a machine. According to CELPIP, raters consider four areas. Knowing them helps you practise the right things.

Content and coherence

Are your ideas relevant, developed with details and organised logically? Clear openings, reasons with examples and smooth transitions all help here.

Vocabulary

Do you use a range of words precisely and naturally? Precise everyday words often score better than rare words used incorrectly.

Listenability

How easy is it to understand you? This includes pronunciation, rhythm, intonation, pace and how much pausing or self-correction interrupts the message.

Task fulfillment

Did you do what the task asked — for the right person, in the right tone, using the time well? Describing instead of predicting in Task 4 is a typical task-fulfillment problem.

How our AI estimate differs

Our AI feedback uses the same four headings to organise advice, but it is an automated practice estimate. It is not identical to a human rater and is not an official CELPIP score.
