CELPIP Score Chart: Levels and CLB

CELPIP reports a level for each of the four skills, from M (minimal) up to 12. For most purposes these levels line up directly with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), which is why many immigration programs set targets in CLB terms.

CELPIP level to CLB

  • CELPIP 10–12 → CLB 10 (advanced proficiency)
  • CELPIP 9 → CLB 9
  • CELPIP 8 → CLB 8
  • CELPIP 7 → CLB 7
  • CELPIP 6 → CLB 6
  • CELPIP 5 → CLB 5
  • CELPIP 4 → CLB 4
  • CELPIP 3 and M → below CLB 4

Common targets

Requirements change, so always confirm on the official IRCC website. As general context, CLB 7 in all four skills is often discussed for skilled-worker pathways, and CLB 9 or higher can add significant points in Express Entry. Canadian citizenship applications typically require CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking.

How our practice estimates relate

Our Listening and Reading estimates use the number of correct answers out of 38. Writing and Speaking estimates come from a rule-based checker or AI. All are practice estimates — they help you track progress but are not official CELPIP scores.
