CELPIP Speaking Task 4: Making Predictions

Using the same kind of scene as Task 3, you predict what will probably happen next. On the official test you get 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak. Below is a simple answer plan, the mistake we see most often, and a free timed practice task you can try now without an account.

Task format at a glance

Preparation time: 30 seconds. Speaking time: 60 seconds. Your response is recorded by the computer and, on the real test, scored later by trained CELPIP raters.

  • Example prompt: In the market picture, a child is reaching for a stack of apples — predict what happens next.

A simple plan for your answer

This structure is our independent advice, not an official CELPIP template:

  • Pick three or four people or objects in the picture.
  • Make a prediction for each using "will probably", "is likely to", "might".
  • Give a short reason based on what you can see.
  • Avoid re-describing the scene — the task is the future.

Most common mistake

Repeating the Task 3 description instead of making predictions.

Practise with a timer so you get used to finishing your last sentence before the time runs out — an answer that stops mid-sentence sounds unfinished.
