CELPIP Writing Task 1: Writing an Email

In Writing Task 1 you read a short situation and write an email of 150–200 words in about 27 minutes, covering three bullet points. The reader might be a friend, a manager, a landlord or a company, so tone matters.

Format

Time: about 27 minutes. Length: 150–200 words. Content: three points you must address, for example explaining a problem, describing what happened and requesting a solution.

A reliable structure (our advice)

  • Greeting that matches the reader (Dear Ms. Patel / Hi Sam).
  • One-sentence purpose: why you are writing.
  • One short paragraph for each bullet point.
  • Polite closing with a clear next step, then a sign-off.

Choosing the right tone

Formal emails avoid contractions and slang and use polite requests ("I would appreciate it if…"). Informal emails to friends can use contractions and a warmer tone, but still need complete sentences and clear paragraphs.
