CELPIP Writing Task 1 Guide: Writing a Strong Email

This guide walks through a practical 27-minute plan for the CELPIP email task, with sample language you can adapt. The format details are from the official test; the plan is our independent advice.

Minute-by-minute plan

  • 0–3 min: read the task, identify the reader and the three points, choose formal or informal tone.
  • 3–22 min: write — greeting, purpose sentence, one paragraph per point, closing.
  • 22–27 min: proofread for articles, tenses, spelling and missing points.

Sample opening and closing (formal)

"Dear Mr. Chen, I am writing regarding the heating problem in my apartment, which has continued for over a week." … "I would appreciate it if the repair could be scheduled before Friday. Thank you for your prompt attention. Sincerely, Amira Haddad"

Sample opening and closing (informal)

"Hi Jordan, I hope you're doing well! I'm writing because I need your advice about…" … "Let me know what you think when you get a chance. Talk soon, Priya"

Develop each point

For each bullet point write two or three sentences: the main idea, a specific detail, and a consequence or request. This is what turns a list of answers into a coherent email.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a subject line?

It isn't required unless the task asks for one; focus on the email body.

Can I use contractions?

Avoid them in formal emails; they are fine in informal emails to friends.

How many paragraphs?

Usually four or five: opening, one per point, and closing.
