CELPIP Writing Task 2 Guide: Responding to a Survey

Task 2 is a short persuasive response. You have about 26 minutes to choose an option and support it in 150–200 words. Here is a practical approach — our own advice — with sentence frames you can reuse.

Choose in two minutes

List one or two concrete reasons for each option. Choose the option with stronger examples, not the one you personally prefer.

Structure with sentence frames

  • Opening: "I believe Option B, expanding the library, would benefit our community most."
  • Reason 1: "The main reason is cost. …"
  • Reason 2: "In addition, … For example, …"
  • Other option: "Although a new pool would be popular in summer, …"
  • Conclusion: "For these reasons, I strongly support Option B."

Make reasons specific

"It is cheaper" is a claim. "A library extension costs less to run because it needs no heating of water or lifeguards" is a supported reason. Raters notice the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to mention the other option?

It's not required, but briefly addressing it often strengthens your argument.

Is there a best option?

No. Both options can score equally well if supported clearly.

How long should the conclusion be?

One or two sentences is enough.
